  • Project title: Intelligent Cabin for Road Transportation (CABINTEC).

Funded by: Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (Call for outstanding scientific-technological projects) and European Union (ERDF).
    Reference: PSE-370100-2007-2.
    Duration: July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2010.
Principal investigator: Dr Alejo Avello Iturriagagoitia (CEIT).
Responsible investigators at URJC: Dr Enrique Cabello Pardos (ALERTA subproject) and Dr Isaac Martín de Diego (REGISTRA subproject).

This project aims to design the cockpit of a vehicle equipped with intelligent technologies able to detect the driver's behaviour (healthy habits vs. dangerous conducts in the context of a safe driving), as well as the study of the parameters describing the vehicle and the driver in the previous instants of an accident.

  • Project title: Pedestrians' Quality Needs (PQN).

Funded by: Sixth European Union Program Framework.
    Reference: COST Action 358.
    Duration: September 25, 2006 – November 12, 2010.
Principal investigator: Dr Rob Methorst (AVV Transport Research Centre, Netherlands).

The Pedestrians' Quality Needs Project (PQN) aims to identify what people need for their safe and agreeable mobility in public space and to provide knowledge of pedestrians' quality needs and how those needs relate to structural and functional interventions, policy making and regulation to support walking conditions across the EU and other involved countries.

  • Project title: Catalogue of Education Activities for Road Safety Technicians.

    Funded by: FITSA Foundation.
Reference: M-254, INV/2005-170 (URJC internal reference).
    Duration: December 1, 2005 – June 30, 2006.
Principal investigator: Dr Ángel Serrano Sánchez de León.

According to the Spanish Traffic General Direction, in 2004 there were in Spain 94009 traffic accidents, in which 4741 peopled died (assessed within the following 30 days after the accident). With respect to the previous year, it can be deduced that there were 5.98 % fewer accidents and 12.19 % fewer casualties. The 2004 data correspond to approximately 110 dead people per million inhabitants. Nevertheless, these chilling numbers are still far from the great aim marked by the European authorities to reduce to the half the number of victims in traffic accidents in the European Union from 2003 to 2010.

To finish with this blight that is destroying our society, Road Safety must not only turn into an absolute priority for our leaders, something that seems to be obtained little by little, but also it is necessary to educate new professionals dedicated to Road Safety, to obtain, from different fronts, the common aim to finish with the victims of traffic accidents.

This work tries to be an updated catalogue to January, 2006, of the offer of education to all levels existing in Spain, from the specializing courses, seminars, meetings and professional days, up to the summer courses or the university subjects. As a good part of the education and the professional recycling takes place in conferences, we have included also references to some of those celebrated in our country in the last years, as well as others that will be take place in the next months.

  • Project title: Analysis of the Spanish presence in Vehicle Safety Forums.

    Funded by: FITSA Foundation.
    Reference: M-216 (URJC internal reference).
    Duration: February 21, 2005 – September 21, 2005.
Principal investigator: Dr Cristina Conde Vilda.

In the context of the diverse meetings and debates of the FITSA Observatories held throughout 2004, it came out on the part of businessmen and people in charge of Research+Development+Innovation the necesity that the Spanish presence in the different forums and international working groups was useful for the sector as captation of information to anticipate positioning and market information.

Before the above mentioned meetings, the FITSA Foundatin had already begun at the end of 2003 to check and analyze the Spanish presence in international forums related to road and vehicle safety. With the impulse contributed from the Observatories to this line of investigations, FITSA established in the middle of 2004 a collaboration with the Group of Face Recognition and Artificial Vision of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, under the protection of the agreement previously signed with this university, for the amplification of the works advanced by FITSA in this direction.

This work of analysis of the Spanish presence in international forums of research and promotion of the vehicle safety tries to improve and to reinforce the work of captation of the knowledge that is currently carried out, as a previous stage to the technological exploration. The final aim of this work is to assess the scientific and technical knowledge acquired in the above mentioned forums for its further diffusion both among the business sectors and the diverse groups and Spanish research centres.

  • Project title: Research on traffic lights intersections regulated by computer vision.

Funded by: RACE (Royal Automobile Club of Spain).
    Duration: February 1, 2003 – December 31, 2003.
Principal Investigator: Dr Enrique Cabello Pardos.

A computer vision driven video sensor was created for the analysis of pedestrian and vehicle movements at a traffic light and the intelligent control of the illumination of the traffic light. Its operation was affected by a series of factors, such as: number of present pedestrians, number of vehicles, vehicles speed, situation of the pedestrians (on the footway or on the pedestrian crossing), among others.

  • Project title: Automatic Classification and Sequential Analysis of Pedestrian-Vehicle Conflicts.

Funded by: Spanish Traffic General Direction.
    Duration: December 28, 1999 – April 28, 2002.
Principal Investigator: Dr Enrique Cabello Pardos.

This project consists on the development of a video sensor in order to study conflicts at pedestrian crossings in the city of Salamanca (Spain). The video sensor analyzes a set of images captured at two crossings and, by means of the selection of the elements in the image, distinction between pedestrians and vehicles, trajectories tracking and speed measurements, it detects the existence of pedetrian-vehicle conflicts. The project was performed in collaboration of the Psicology Department of the Salamanca University, which focused on the obtainment of real parameters that influence the danger degree at pedestrian crossings.
